This musical was staged for the first time at the Barbican Theatre in October 1985. But the Queen’s Theatre was found to be a better venue so it was shifted there in 2004. Alain Boubil has penned the musical brilliantly, which is based on Victor Hugo’s book in 1862, bearing the same name. Equal credit goes to Trevor Nunn, Claude Michel, and Herbert Kretzmer, who are responsible for the direction, music, and lyrics. The musical portrays the lives of the working class in 19th century France during the period of the French Revolution. The living conditions of the poor were harsh and miserable and they were exempted unfairly from various laws that were just for the elite class. However, they struggled along with fierce determination and courage to live in this hostile world. The play tells us different stories over a period of 30 years.
